A dry ridge system is a mortar-free method of fixing the ridge tiles along the top of a pitched roof. Instead of bedding the ridge tiles in mortar, the system secures them mechanically with clips and a ventilated, weatherproof roll. It is now the standard for new pitched roofs and a popular upgrade when a mortar ridge fails.
The problem with mortar ridges
Traditional ridge tiles are bedded in sand-and-cement mortar. Exposed at the highest point of the roof, that mortar weathers, cracks and eventually drops out — leaving ridge tiles loose and at risk in high winds. Repointing is a temporary fix on an already aged bed.
How a dry ridge system works
A dry ridge system uses ridge clips that screw to the battens, holding the ridge tiles down mechanically, with a ventilated roll underneath that seals the gap against wind and rain while allowing high-level ventilation. There is no mortar to degrade.
